Refutation method

Learning & GrowthAdvanced
30 min5 steps1 practitioner

Systematically try to disprove your own beliefs before accepting them as true. Socrates' elenchus method works by finding contradictions in a position until only what survives stands as knowledge.

Steps

1

Write down a belief you hold with high confidence

2

Generate the three strongest arguments against that belief

3

For each counter-argument, ask: does this reveal a genuine contradiction in my position?

4

If your belief survives all three attacks, it is stronger — if not, revise it honestly

5

Apply this method regularly to prevent intellectual complacency
